The idea of the Amsterdam hat popped up to create an iconic and exclusive hat for the citizens (locals) of Amsterdam.
The A-initial is from a custom-made typeface design by Ektypon. This typeface design is based on and inspired by lettering used by New York City DJ’s, MC’s and B-Boys, to customize their garment in the ’70s and ’80s. At that time this typeface was only sold as iron-on transfers in a few local shops.
